Message from Professor C Y Jim

The Candlenut Tree (Aleurites moluccana) located between the Main Library and Knowles Building

Dear Alumni,
One of the finest large trees remaining on campus is the Candlenut Tree (Aleurites moluccana) located between the Main Library and Knowles Building. Having witnessed the vicissitudes in its environs and accompanied us for about four decades, it has become an iconic campus landmark.
Therefore, it is with regret I have to inform you that it has been found to be extremely hazardous, with a high risk of sudden collapse.
In March this year, fungal fruiting bodies began to appear and some of the bark fell off to expose the badly rotted wood underneath. A sonic tomography test established that the trunk has been invaded by wood-decay fungi that penetrate from the surface and grow towards the centre.
All efforts from the Estates Office staff to counter the invasion could not stop the spread of the decay. A second sonic tomography and digital microdrill, both above and below the soil line, confirmed that the decay had spread notably and the trunk base has begun to develop internal cavities. The prognosis is that the decay will further advance to destroy the remaining wood in the lower trunk and trunk base. There is no hope of a recovery.
As the trunk could snap without warning, even without a strong wind, the chance of the toppled tree hitting someone is too high to be acceptable. The area has been cordoned off since Thursday afternoon as a necessary precaution.
It is felt that it is irresponsible to keep such an unsafe tree with a very high probability of collapse in a busy part of our campus. Based on scientific evidence and the risk to life and property, it is recommended that it should be felled by HKU in an orderly manner without delay.
It will be a great pity to lose the tree as members of the HKU family, including our alumni, may have a sentimental attachment to this lovely living landmark. But the plaza will not remain treeless as there is enough room for a large replacement tree to be planted.
The suggested replacement is one of the most stunning Asian flowering trees, the Cassia javanica var. indochinensis (Pink-and-White Shower; the Chinese name is節果決明; previously known as Cassia nodosa). I attach two photos showing this tree, together with one of its attractive flowers, which appear in spring. The tree will grow to a final height of about 15 m and crown spread of 15 m.
It will offer an extremely enchanting signature tree for our campus and a welcoming shade for future generations of students.
The University will announce when the planting of the new tree will take place and all will be welcome to view it.

之前報東亞義工領袖
從滿腔熱血
(明顯係奧運之後)
到點點失落
(因為在waiting list)
到去玩的心態
(後來又在最後一round被取錄)
到徹底失望
(generic training內容空洞, 都只是d facts, 無帶到好重要既信息比d義工, 令到未做過大型運動會既義工有太多不必要期望)


今天上第一次領袖訓練
好像回到正軌
也有點覺得
可能是會辦得很好的...


今天的訓練是有關義務工作管理
可能香港人對管理方面有好多經驗
這一課的訓練, 我可是獲益良多

其實
領導義工
比管理下屬更難
因為
大家都是義務去做的
怎樣去維繫團隊精神
以及學會尊重團隊裡不同背景思想的人
去引領義工們完成目標
是一門好艱深的學問

這會是一個
很好的個人鍛鍊


有些人會覺得做義工
'好偉大'

不瞞你說
在義工服務中
我得到的
比付出的更多

去年的回報
真的比我想像的更多


期待下一課
多學一點

紫陽先生在天之靈如讀此信﹕
今天是極有意義的日子啊所以紫陽先生你想不想先聽一個笑話？但先說明，有人說，網上說，這是千真萬確的故事雖然聽起來頗像一齣荒誕劇宛如20年前的那個天安門前血色黃昏。

咳，是這樣的。話說某城某地有某書店於數天以前如昔日每天般營業賣書，負責管理童書樓層的那位戴膠框眼鏡的老實女子如昔日每天般整理書籍上架下架，然而這天又跟昔日每天終究不太一樣因為上級主管忽然前來找她而且眼神帶著異樣。

怎麼啦？老實女子問他。怎麼大清早有電梯不坐寧願跑樓梯爭取一分一秒前來找我把自己累個氣喘咻咻。

你說沒事也可以你說有事也可以總之是可以有事也可以沒事。跟她同樣老實的書店主管一邊喘氣一邊把話說得似禪令女子摸不著頭腦。喘完氣，繼續道。是這樣的，我們的童書架上不是有一本德國中篇童話叫做《5月35日》嗎？薄薄的一本，但有配圖，印製精美，內容描述孩子和叔叔騎一匹吃了糖就懂得說話的馬在天空上亂飛亂跑到處尋找烏托邦。快把它找出來，先收起來，這段日子，別賣了。

老實女子加倍摸不頭腦用疑惑的眼神詢問主管為何如此，好生生的一本童書放在架上好一段日子了，銷路不算太好卻亦不算太壞，為什麼突然緊張兮兮非把它收起不可。是版權有問題嗎？應該不會吧，出版社是國企老字號呢。

不是不是。主管抬一下眼鏡把聲音壓低向老實女子解釋一切。你忘記了再過幾天就是什麼日子了嗎我們豈能不小心翼翼謹慎提防，有關單位早已雷厲風行上網嚴打存心搗亂的不良分子的反動言論，我們吃出版這行飯便該對文字加倍敏感避免落人口實更避免遭人利用，你自己想想5月35日這個荒謬日期豈不暗藏玄機有幾分稀奇古怪，萬一被有關單位前來問罪責備我們附和歪說我們豈非吃不完兜著走？ 不怕一萬寧怕萬一，還是先把這書收起待到7月才再拿出販售。

女子只是老實並不愚蠢想了一下立即明白主管心事，是啊，5月35日，35減31等於4，過完5月再加4天，豈不等於6月4日那個春夏之交的多事之夜啊一念及此馬上把她嚇得魂不附體。可惡可惡原來我們書店一直把禁書當寶還放在童書部門簡直是荼毒少年，老實女子二話不說趨前伸手把書架上的那本《5月35日》取下抱在懷裏拿到貨倉並將之壓在其他書籍的最底最底。不准提六四，也不准提五三五，某些中國人對於某些數字特別恐懼恍似見鬼或許只因心裏有鬼，紫陽先生，你說好不好笑？

趙紫陽《改革歷程》

應有一個副題「鄧小平批判」

對你說這個故事當然不是只想博紫陽先生你在天之靈的莞然一笑。對你說這個故事只是為了告訴你中國人仍然在6月4日這個血色黃昏裏黯然未醒，天未明，夜未央，我們猶在夢中，因為我們仍遭禁語，《5月35日》只是現實的荒誕一則而我們當然已知所有報刊電視以至所有網絡平台皆被嚴密監刪以至中國人在中國大陸已經集體失去了發聲管道。你亦被禁聲了15年了不是嗎，4年前在君去後你的女兒說過一句「父親終於獲得了自由」，當時我寫了一篇文章叫做〈被軟禁了15年的豈只有趙紫陽〉我指出其實15年來在抽象的意義上許許多多中國人跟你一同遭受精神軟禁，箇中情形其實如同鮑彤在《改革歷程》書內所言「六四開創了全民鴉雀無聲的新局面。鄧小平南巡後，中國在鴉雀無聲中重提經濟改革，重新分配財富。誰是鴉雀無聲下再分配的受益者？我不知道。我只知道，全體被迫鴉雀無聲的人，統統都是六四屠城的受害者。即使當時尚未出生的人，既然出生之後必須鴉雀無聲，並且必須在不知不覺之中，畢恭畢敬，禮拜權力，聆聽謊言，當然更是無辜的受害者」。

對了，《改革歷程》，你的聲音被轉化為文字被呈現為30萬字的回憶著作但該書其實應有一個副名叫做「鄧小平批判」，因為內容從頭到尾無處不在控訴小平同志對紫陽先生和你的耀邦的控制操弄，把胡先生驅迫下台的是他，把你驅迫下台的亦是他，號令六四鎮壓號令北京戒嚴號令全城禁聲的也是他，讀完全書遂令我對平反六四的樂觀增添了不少悲觀擔憂唯恐此事難上加難。為什麼？只因欲要平反六四很明顯已非只能所謂「清算李鵬」如斯簡單只因此書盡情揭露小平同志才是血色黃昏的始作俑者才是最最最後應負全責的主腦人物，但問題是小平同志乃開放改革的大旗手總舵主若要令他問責等於把開放改革的權力源頭質疑推倒，如斯關鍵豈是易行看來你的回憶雖令大家對六四之夜更多了解卻又令六四悲劇更難平反從此路更難行。人生大事小事皆難盡如人意此事唉又是另一明證。

或許世上本就沒有什麼容易的事情又或許世上最容易的事情就只是提筆撰文喚醒記憶至少是對個人的記憶負責。紫陽先生，你早就「自由」了，可是我們至今仍被禁聲仍在夢裏掙扎幻滅，在君去後我寫過一段悼文充滿了樂觀期待，當時我說靈堂的大門張開了一條縫隙，寒天雪地裏有人遠來排隊只為前來看你一眼，只因20年前你亦曾來看他們一眼。20年的歲月不可謂不長，你在高爾夫球場上不知道已經打了多少桿揮了多少棒，可是小白球一直在洞口盤旋然後應聲彈出，沒有進去未能進去正如你的平反心願功虧一簣。這些年頭你沉默地打孤單地打，達官貴人統統早已棄你遠去，正如這群曾被你在廣場上看了一眼的唱歌少年，他們此後有如流水滲透無形於中國大地。剩你一人，綠草如茵，白髮似雪，抬頭望天，天氣是不熱也不冷。離散的日子像火車般隆隆往前開去，乘客一心一意眼睛向前找尋光明出路，不敢回憶未能遺忘我們沒有意願再次提起，當年的理想昔日的歌聲最好像女兒紅一樣深深埋於泥底，讓它發酵讓他變醇讓它靜靜地躺在那裏，人們心底彷彿互相打不可告人的密碼深信總有一天它能出土，在晴朗的一天在明亮的一夜，總會有人把它挖出來打開來讓酒香飄散於空氣。到那時日，在那廣場，我們總能重遇。

因此啊書記同志你當年是來得太晚而今天卻是走得太早，你無緣聞嗅酒香也無法讓酒精洗滌你的憂胃愁腸，你只能享受新聞報紙的低格版面上的一段短短訃聞寫著「趙紫陽同志昨晨病逝」，你的功過你的成就你的積鬱盡在9個字內變成隱形，原來你不辭勞苦貢獻了一輩子的祖國竟仍是如斯祖國，不如歸去，不如歸去，且看另天堂之國是否亦會如此荒唐。

歸去來兮，良馬足因無主踠，舊交心為絕弦哀，20年前你和人們對望一眼便成為交心盟友，前路茫茫，後事幽幽，女兒紅仍在泥底正如中國仍未解封，唯有先用一杯五糧液為你餞行道別。恭喜你，自由了，放心去，好同志。終有一天，人們會到廣場再喊你的名字，而在此以前，先對你說一個笑話，今天幾號，5月35日，大家都在記起你。
